Lounge Chair
Andreu World Design Contest Brief
Comfort?
ooohhh!!!
Comfort? ooohhh!!!
But, what is comfort… in a seat?
I found myself hopping from one chair to another in IKEA, trying to figure it out. First, I had to understand my idea of comfort, what it feels like, and how it shapes how I sit.
From there, I began exploring the curves of comfort and how to bring that feeling to life in a design.
Brief
To design a seat that understands comfort and helps you relax, all while keeping the circular economy at the centre.
Research
Understanding comfort across different seats, then choosing a seat that defines comfort, ‘a lounge chair’. Analysing Andreu World’s existing collection for comfort.
Ideation
I started by experimenting with different curves and bends a seat could have, then matched them with ergonomic data to improve comfort and refine the dimensions. While exploring comfort, I also considered sustainability, looking into methods of repair and designing for disassembly. The goal was to create parts that could be easily swapped without permanent joints, ultimately extending the seat’s lifespan.
Development
The goal was to experiment with different frames and materials that would work while remaining feasible for manufacturing. The first design used a hollow metal frame, which then evolved into metal joints with wooden dowels, and finally into a moulded veneer frame.
